Introduction

The Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Ltd. is a body corporate, established in the year 1949 and registered under the Co-operative Societies Act 1925. It is apex body of 24 Cooperative Housing Societies of Karachi established for providing shelter to its members.


In 1947, Pakistan emerged as new state with Karachi as its capital. The creation of the new state resulted in migration of millions of people to Karachi and other parts of Sindh. The maximum influx of migrating people was in Karachi thus creating huge shortage in housing Sector. The newly created state and the local councils of Karachi had no adequate resources to face the situation and bridge gap between demand and availability of housing facilities.


Realizing the importance and gravity of the problems, the Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Limited was established in 1949 and 24 Cooperative Housing Societies were affiliated to it as its members. The Federal Government provided 1175 acres of land to the Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Ltd., which was further leased out to 24 member Societies for allotment to their individual members.


Affairs of the Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Ltd. are managed by a Board of Directors comprising of 24 Directors, representing member societies. The Managing Director is the executive head of the Union.
