The gap between availability and demand in housing sector was a serious problem after creation of Pakistan as a new state in 1947 . Millions of people migrated to Karachi after partition. The newly born state was confronted with gigantic problems, including providing shelter to shelter-less people. The Government and local councils working under it were neither ready nor capable enough to meet this challenge. Thus need was felt to form an organizations which can handle this important and serious issue of providing housing to people.
In this background, the Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Ltd., was established in 1949 and registered under Cooperative Societies Act 1925. The Union was established to acquire land from Federal and Provincial Governments for housing sector in order to meet growing demand of housing. 24 cooperative housing societies formed and registered under Cooperative Societies Act became members of the K.C.H.S. Union Ltd. The Union is the apex body of these Societies.
The Federal Government made available 1175 acres of land to Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Ltd., in 1954. The land was sub-leased to 24 member housing societies, they further allotted land to their members in shape of plots of various sizes for residential purpose. Since the local councils of the city were short of funds, expertise and resources, therefore the gigantic task of development of land allotted to K.C.H.S. Union Ltd. was also entrusted to Union with objective of making the land allotted to Union into a modern township with all basic infrastructure and civic amenities.
The Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Ltd., completed development work relating to construction of roads, laying of water supply and sewerage lines, construction of storm water drain and provision of street lights in 1968. This gigantic work was completed by Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Ltd., and the member societies from their own resources, without any financial help from Government.
The development work carried out by Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Ltd., included construction of 110 kilometer roads, 120 kilometer sewerage lines and 130 kilometer main water supply network. The civic facilities were also being rendered by Karachi Cooperative Housing Societies Union Ltd., in initial period. Later on during different periods the Karachi Municipal Corporation, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Karachi Development Authority and City District Government took our responsibility of civic services in the area of K.C.H.S. Union Ltd. Karachi.
